The structure of families have changed over the years and indeed will continue to change. The law has attempted to keep up with this change to ensure that all members of the family are afforded their respective rights. For example, the law has now come to put in place measures to ensure that unmarried and same sex couples are afforded the same rights as married couples.

Also in the event of family breakdowns where children are involved there are protection measures in place for the children through Social Services. Even at this time, the courts acknowledge the rights of ALL family members who have had close contact with children whilst maintaining that the needs of the child remain paramount.
